You're definitely right, I think I was too quick to assign advertising the "necessary evil" tag. The problem is that advertising so quickly became the "next big thing" for internet-based business models that it became a gold mine in which people figured "hey, let's throw these animated ads on our website that have nothing to do with what our users want because these ads pay us the most".

Users could only deal with this for so long before we started enabling popup blockers and other such anti-annoyance tools by default.

Advertising is NOT evil. It's wonderful!! If done right... the only reason that advertising has a bad rap is because there are bad ways to go about advertising. Just like in any industry, there are people who do it right, and those who taint the good name of advertising by making manipulative ads that are annoying on purpose, or ads that are annoying because they are irrelevant to the viewer or just down right incompetent.

My company does internet advertising right by using keyword stuffing to maximize relevancy, and not just to blitz our ads out there for anyone who could see it. Gotta defend my industry here ;)
